Background of the Study
Nigerian youth communication has been significantly reshaped by digital media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat. These platforms promote morphosyntactic innovation—new ways of forming words and constructing sentences—as users adapt language to fit digital constraints and social media aesthetics (Uche, 2023). Youths frequently employ abbreviations, novel word formations, and creative sentence structures that diverge from standard language conventions. This innovation reflects both the influence of global digital trends and localized cultural expressions. By analyzing textual and audiovisual content from Instagram posts and Snapchat stories, this study aims to document the evolving morphosyntactic features among Nigerian youth. The research investigates how these innovations serve not only as markers of identity but also as tools for efficient communication in fast-paced digital environments (Chinonso, 2024). The study further explores the interplay between traditional language norms and emerging digital expressions, providing insights into the future trajectory of Nigerian language use in the digital age (Bamidele, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident morphosyntactic creativity in Nigerian youth communication on digital platforms, there is a dearth of systematic research on this phenomenon. Existing studies often focus on general trends in digital communication without analyzing specific structural innovations (Ifeoma, 2023). This lack of focused investigation hinders the understanding of how youth language adapts morphosyntactically in response to new media pressures. The absence of detailed data on morphosyntactic innovation impedes the development of language policies and educational strategies that can accommodate these changes. This study seeks to address this gap by analyzing the morphosyntactic features present in Instagram and Snapchat usage among Nigerian youth (Uche, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the morphosyntactic innovations in Nigerian youth communication on digital platforms. The findings will inform educators, linguists, and digital content creators about the evolving nature of language in the digital era, supporting adaptive language policies and teaching methods (Uche, 2023; Chinonso, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of morphosyntactic innovation in Nigerian youth communication on Instagram and Snapchat.
